The Greater Birmingham Fiber Guild

The Greater Birmingham Fiber Guild GBFG Our Work in Pictures

Welcome!

Welcome to THE GREATER BIRMINGHAM FIBER GUILD web site. We are a group of fiber enthusiasts from Birmingham, Alabama who meet at least once a month to knit, crochet, tat, bobbin lace, weave, spin, felt, dye, talk about and play with fiber.

Our meetings are on the second Saturday of every month September through June at 10:00 a.m. until about noon. We don't have a general meeting in July or August. We do have small interest groups that meet once a month so when you visit ask about the spinning, bobbin lace, and tatting study groups.

Please check the monthly meetings to see where we will be meeting. We will be meeting at Bare Hands Gallery most months. Sometimes we meet at the Alabama Veteran's Memorial Foundation park off I-459. We also have picnics and workshops in various places.

Informal Meeting in June

Well, we made our soap with Tonni in April, had our picnic in May where we got our soap and now we are working on making some soap bags to put the soap in. Bring your projects to work on and share some quality social time with other Guild members. Also, if you have a pattern for a soap bag that you want to share with others, please bring that.

REMEMBER: we are now meeting at Bare Hands Gallery-Richard Arrington Blvd.  Parking on the street and in the alley.

Guild Equipment for Rent

The Guild has some equipment available for rent. Most floor looms, table looms, spinning wheel and carder are available for just $5.00 per month with your membership. It's a good way to see if you want to spin or weave before you invest in the equipment. We have just purchased a new (to us) spinning wheel. Please ask about renting it.

Single Member – $25.00

Family - $30.00

To join the Guild please send a check to: GBFG, P.O. Box 660723, Birmingham, AL 35266-0723.

Current Projects

Watch your newsletter for some new, upcoming, weaving classes. We have a teacher, a space and the enthusiasm for more people to learn to weave!

This summer, even though we don't have the usual meetings, we are planning a picnic with the Huntsville Guild. We will meet in Cullman and bring a dish to share. It will be a great way to meet other fiber enthusiasts in the State. Also, we are planning to have a dye day at Jennifer's place in Calera. Check your newsletter for dates and plan to come.

This year our Homewood Library Show in October, 2009 will be "All About Lace." You should have gotten some good lace knitting tips from our March meeting. Jennifer and Tonni did a great job with the tips and all the projects people brought and explained were outstanding. Such talent in this group! The lace pieces do not have to be knitted. In fact, this is an opportunity to display lots of different pieces. Bring out your handmade bobbin lace, tatted lace, woven lace, or a combination lace project. We need everyone to participate to have a good show so start your projects now.

Our community project this year will be making and donating hats for preemie newborn babies. Since it was so successful last year and there is a real need for these we have decided to continue this year. They don't take long to make and are very appreciated.

Please note!!! We have changed the December exchange gift to bags. So, make a bag you would be willing to have for yourself. You have plenty of time to plan and make this bag over the summer. Any fiber technique is acceptable. You can spin or buy the yarn, knit, weave, tat, felt or use a combination of your fiber skills to create a one of a kind bag. At the exchange, when you bring a bag you will get a bag. It will be fun!

No Monthly Meetings in July or August

Have a great Summer!
